The highly anticipated fight between Jose Luis Castillo and Diego Corrales has been cancelled due to Castillo`s inability to make weight. Castillo exceeded the 135-pound limit, weighing in at 140 pounds, and 139 1/2 pounds a few minutes later.
After two hours to decide whether to take the fight, Corrales chose to not accept a non-title bout. Claiming it would be too dangerous, Corrales stated, “I have a wife and children and I want to see them grow up.”
In their second bout, Castillo also came into the fight overweight, but Corrales had chosen to accept the fight. He was eventually knocked out in the 4th round.
Castillo could only apologize for not making the weight. According to the Nevada State Athletic Commission, Castillo will have to forfeit 25% of his $900,000 purse. Also, Corrales is given an extra $125,000 on top of his $1.2 million purse from Castillo`s camp.
