Ward Dominated Abraham For Twelve Rounds

CARSON, Calif. (May 14, 2011) – Undefeated World Boxing Association (WBA) champion Andre Ward moved one win away from claiming the ground-breaking inaugural Super Six World Boxing Classic Cup with a convincing 12-round unanimous decision over “King” Arthur Abraham at The Home Depot Center Saturday on SHOWTIME^®.

Ward (24-0, 13 KOs) will face the winner of the June 4 Super Six Semifinal on SHOWTIME between World Boxing Council (WBC) super middleweight champion Carl “The Cobra” Froch (27-1, 20 KOs) and former world champion Glen “The Road Warrior” Johnson (51-14-2, 35 KOs) of Miami, Fla., for the right to fight for the Super Six title and 168-pound world supremacy sometime in the fall.

Fighting outside the comfortable confines of Oakland, Calif., for the first time in 20 months spanning three fights, Ward defended his WBA belt for the third time in what SHOWTIME expert analyst Al Bernstein called one of Ward’s “most complete wins he’s ever had in his career.”

Judge Stanley Christodoulou scored every round to Ward (120-108) while German judge Ingo Barrabas had it (118-110) and Dr. James Jen Kin had Ward winning, 118-111.

A boisterous crowd cheered both for the Californian Ward and Abraham, backed by hundreds of loud Armenian fans from Southern California. “Arthur Abraham was strong and very determined,” Ward said. “He had passionate fans and he didn’t want to lose in front of them. I’m going to stay humble and keep working hard. I want to be champion for a long time and take the least amount of punishment possible.”

Abraham (32-2, 26 KOs), of Berlin, Germany, by way of Armenia, lost for the third straight time but vowed after the fight that he would remain in the talent-rich super middleweight division.

“I started well and thought I was doing OK for the first three rounds,” said Abraham, the former International Boxing Federation (IBF) middleweight world champion. “He never hurt me and I was blocking all his punches. But then I cramped up when I was trying for the knockout and I couldn’t do it.

“I gave it my all and fought really hard and will stay at super middleweight.”

Ward Is One Win Away From Being The Super Six Champion

Ward seemed to get stronger and stronger as the fight went on while Abraham looked visibly tired towards the end of the fight, absorbing Ward’s hard body shots and a variety of assorted jabs and uppercuts.

“My trainer says that I’m the type of fighter to make adjustments and that’s what I did,” said Ward, who threw 289 jabs during the fight, landing 178 of his 444 total punches. “I wish the refs would have let me fight on the inside – that’s what we trained for. But we made adjustments and got the victory. After a hard hit, I would go back to my corner and I would do two things: I would listen to my corner and talk to myself and I would say, ‘Bite down and fight back.’ “

Ward will be intently watching on June 4 in Atlantic City, N.J. “I’ll fight Johnson or Froch, but I think the public wants to see Froch-Ward,” he said.

In a non-televised undercard fight, heavyweight world contender and popular Southern California slugger

Chris Arreola turned in an impressive performance against Nagy Aguilera, stopping him in the third round.

Undefeated Gold medalist Andre “SOG” Ward put on a dominating Boxing display against veteran Arthur Abraham. Abraham (32-3, 26 KOs) came out strong, moving forward and surprising everyone with his quick jab. But by round 4, Ward (24-0, 13 KOs) made the necessary adjustments and pounded away on Abraham. Doubling up on his jab, Ward was able to win the last 8 round. Judges at ringside scored the bout 120-108, 118-110, 118-111. Touchgoves.com had the fight 118-110 for Andre. Ward moves on to face the winner of the Glen Johnson/Carl Froch fight next month.

Bernard Hopkins Jean Pascal Review

Last night, Bernard “The Executioner” Hopkins, age 45, took and Canadian Jean Pascal who has been regarded as the top light-heavyweight fighter by most observers. Pascal who is the current champion and is coming off of his impressive victory over top contender Chad Dawson scored two early knock-downs in rounds one and four. Hopkins was not hurt by either punch. After round four, Hopkins seemed to take over the fight. Hopkins neutralized nearly everything that Pascal was throwing by landing punishing left body shots that appeared to disable Pascal. Hopkins looked fresh, was throwing combinations and was chasing Pascal down. Pascal had nothing to fire back.

Hopkins was rightly upset at the decision draw and had the following things to say: ”I’m going to stand up because my legs are fresh. I’m a fifteen round fighter, but they don’t have that no more, it was abandoned 15-20 years ago. People asked before I came up to Canada, ‘Bernard, are you worried about the judges?’ I said no because I believe when you put on a show, no matter what I think, the world and the fans will see what they see. It doesn’t matter whether you’re from Canada, but there comes a time, no matter who you are, where you have to say that Bernard fought a hell of a fight and he believe’s he won. It’s alright to say that. It’s no crime speaking your mind. Your counterparts might not like it, but it’s okay. There’s one thing about TV. People from around the world, when they see what they see, it is what it is. Why would I (come back). Forget the age thing, although that’s impressive, I could hang my hat on that and say nothing after that. That’s impressive. I’m from the States, I come and fight a guy that’s 28 years old, young, strong, from Canada, in his home town, and I get a draw?

Saul “Canelo” Alverez continued his undefeated streak with a 12 round decision over veteran Lovemore N’dou. Although the explosiveness was missing, Canelo won nearly every round against the crafty veteran in front of 15,000 fans in Vera Cruz, Mexico.

On the undercard, Sluger Daniel Ponce De Leon recorded a seventh round TKO over Sergio Manuel Medina. Ponce De Leon now has 7 straight victories since his first round TKO loss to Juan Manuel Lopez.

Pacquiao Destroys Margarito

Arlington, TX – Congressman Manny Pacquiao took apart Antonio Margarito at Dallas Cowboy Stadium in front of a crowd of more than 41,000 who witnesses a nearly 12-round shutout. One judge scored every round for Pacquiao another gave Margarito two rounds and the third judge saw one round for Margarito.

Pre-fight drama surrounded the bout which included both camps accusing the other of playing dirty. Margarito’s camp was complaining about the way Pacquiao had his hands wrapped while Pacquiao’s camp demanded a drug-test to determine if Margarito had taken any banned substances. A package of Hydroxycut was found in Margarito’s locker-room – a banned substance.

Margarito was left beaten badly with a bloody face, and both eyes swollen shut. Margarito was taken immediately to the hospital and was diagnosed with a broken orbital bone. Margarito will require surgery.

Pacquaio was out-weighed by 17 pounds with a height disadvantage of nearly five inches. The Filipino superstar captures his eight title in different weight classes, a record achieved by no one else. Pacquiao’s rise as a boxer has propelled him to a stratospheric level only a few have ever attained. He is a cultural icon that has captured the hearts of millions of fans around the world. His offensive weapons are ferocious enough to have annihilated any boxer who tried to stand in his way.

Congressman Pacquiao is the best fighter in the world.

Shane Mosley vs. Sergio Mora – Outcome Disgusting

After watching the Shane Mosley – Sergio Mora fight at the Staples Center in Los Angeles this past weekend, I was beyond myself after hearing the judges score-cards. First off, let me say that I believe Sugar Shane should retire. He is not only beyond his prime, but he is unable to fight competitively past four rounds.

Now, for the part of the fight that made me sick to call myself a boxing writer – the outcome. I would like to know what planet Kermit Bayless is from or which fight he was watching when he scored the fight in favor of Mora 115 – 113. There is no possible way anyone in their right mind, who knows anything about scoring a bout, could have possibly given Mora seven rounds – just no way. To be frank, Mora looked more like a marathon runner than a fighter. He was in there just trying to survive. Mora landed 93 – 508 punches. Mosley landed nearly twice that, 161 of 522.

I had the fight scored 117 – 111, ESPN had the fight 117 – 111, other ringside media that I spoke with had the bout for Mosley. I have yet to speak with anyone that thought Mora won the fight. Mr. Latin Snake, do you really think you won the fight? It seemed to me that you were satisfied just surviving against a future Hall-of-Famer.

The Weight was Too much! Cintron Falls from ring, Williams gets “Win”

In what can only be described as a freak accident, Paul Williams defeated Kermit Cintron by split decision after Cintron fell out of the ring and had to be taken away on a stretcher. Under California rules, after the 3rd round, the fight must go to the score cards. Two of the judges had Williams ahead, while the other judge had Cintron winning the first 3 round.

The fight started off promising, with both fighters letting their hands go. In typical Williams style, Paul used his slick skills to punch his way past Cintrons defense. The fighters seemed to slow down the action in the 2nd and 3rd round, before going toe-to-toe in the fourth. After Williams had landed two hard punches, Cintron answered with a fierce right that stood Williams straight up. As the crowd started to go crazy, the fighters legs became entangled that led to the Cintron Fall.

No word yet on Cintron’s injury.

Mayweather Dominates Mosley, Stays unbeaten!

Floyd Mayweather Jr virtually shut out future hall of famer Shane Mosley over 12 rounds to remain unbeaten and further distance himself as the best pound for pound fighter in the world. Mayweather (41-0) controlled the fight with his speed and power shots, seemingly landing at will. Mosley (46-6) landed two flush power shots in the 2nd round, but was unable to connect with anything from then on. After the 3rd round, Mosley was breathing heavy taking pot shots from Mayweather.

After the fight, a usually classy Larry Merchant prodded Mayweather on his whether or not Floyd would agree to lower his demand that Manny Pacquiao take part in olympic style drug testing. Mayweather reiterated that all he wanted was an even playing field.”If Manny Pacquiao can take a blood and urine test then we have a fight,” Mayweather said. “If not, no fight.”

Now that he’s further proven he’s the best around, Pac-man may not have a choice.

Adamek Beats Areola

In an action-packed heavy-weight bout, Thomasz Adamek beat Chris Areola by scores of 114-114, 115-113, 117-111. Areolas face was swollen so bad after the fight, that he himself announced that “I look like Shrek.” Areola couldn’t match the skill and movements of Adamek throughout the fight.

Areola managed to land a few good shots and combinations, but it wasn’t enough to handle the agile Adamek who moves in-and-out, put together combinations and used a lot of movement. Adamek’s mouth piece came out several times during the bout, and the sole of his shoe broke off. His corner had to tape the sole back onto the rest of the shoe.

Areola’s soft mid-section showed. He came in at a weight of 250lbs. at weigh-in. This was Areola’s second loss. This was Adamek’s third fight at the heavyweight division – he is undefeated in that class.

Alfredo Angula Beats Joel Julio!

On HBO’s Boxing After Dark, Alfredo Angula took on Joel Julio on the undercard bout before the main event. Julio fought an extremely calculated fight, landing combinations and controlling the rounds. Angula’s power and experienced showed however by landing the heavier more flush shots. About halfway through the 11th round, Angula landed an crushing overhand right that sent Julio to the canvas. He never recovered and the ref stopped the bout.
