The 34-year-old Dzinziruk (35-0, 23 KOs) is arguably the world’s top junior middleweight, but is largely unknown in the U.S. The southpaw was inactive in 2009 due to a contract dispute with his European former promoter.All eyes will be on Dzinziruk come Friday as he is the No. 1 ranked junior middleweight by many well-respected boxing websites, including ESPN.com and FightNews, ahead of 154-pound stars Alfredo Angulo, Antonio Margarito, Kermit Cintron, Cory Spinks and Yuri Foreman.

He recently signed a promotional contract with American promoters Artie Pelullo’s Banner Promotions and Gary Shaw Productions.

Question: Why did you decide to come to the United States?

Answer: “I’ve fought in other countries. I just want to show the American people what I’m all about. I fought here in the Olympics (1996 in Atlanta) and the Goodwill Games (1998 in New York) but as an amateur. I want people to know my name. I want people to recognize me when I walk down the street.”

Question: You haven’t fought in 18 months. Are you concerned about ring rust?

Answer: “Of course I’ve been out of the ring for 18 months but that only makes me hungrier. I’m also fighting in the States for the first time but it doesn’t matter where I fight: the U.S., England, Poland. A ring is a ring. I’m just ready to go in there and show everybody who Sergiy is.”

Question: You and Alfredo Angulo are both represented by Gary Shaw. How soon would you like to fight Angulo?

Answer: “I’d like to just get this first fight out of the way first. But, yes, I would like to fight him. I was at his last fight. He looked pretty good but I am not afraid of Angulo. There are a lot of interesting names in my division. Paul Williams, the interim champion Angulo, (Kermit) Cintron. I just have to be patient and I know I will meet the best in the division.”

Question: You are ranked very high in your division. Does that put added pressure on you, especially since a lot of people in the States aren’t familiar with you?

Answer: “Yes. Absolutely. I’m very aware of it, that the pressure is on. Everybody is looking at me and that’s why I am here in America and training hard. I’m ready to show the U.S. and SHOWTIME audience what a dominant fighter I am.”

Question: What do you know about SHOWTIME?

Answer: “SHOWTIME is a major network and does a great job with boxing and its different shows. I just feel so fortunate that my first fight in America is united with SHOWTIME and I’m hoping to show a great outcome and fight.”

Question: What do you like most about living in the States?

Answer: “The sparring partners are much better and the gyms are different than in Germany and England. I’ve been able to travel around and sightsee a little bit. But after this fight I will do a lot more. I’ll go to the beach and visit Las Vegas.”

THE BIG APPLE (May 12, 2010) – “Stadium Slugfest,” the chin musical hit which will be performed live by MIGUEL COTTO and YURI FOREMAN, for one night only, Saturday, June 5 at Yankee Stadium, is already the No. 1 billboard hit of Times Square!

Foreman, the undefeated World Boxing Association (WBA) super welterweight champion is in training for his first title defense, against three-time world champion Cotto, the pride or Puerto Rico. Cotto vs. Foreman will headline “Stadium Slugfest” — the inaugural brawl at Yankee Stadium, Saturday, June 5. Foreman (28-0, 8 KOs), a 29-year-old from Brooklyn, NY, became the first orthodox Jew to win a world championship in nearly 75 years.  Born in Gomel, Belarus, and raised in Israel, Foreman eventually emigrated to Brooklyn.  The 2001 New York Golden Gloves Champion turned pro in 2002 and began studying to become a rabbi three years ago.  Foreman knocked down defending WBA super welterweight champion Daniel Santos in the final round of their November 2009 rumble in Las Vegas (ironically on the undercard of Pacquiao-Cotto) en route to a decisive and unanimous decision victory while becoming Israel’s first world champion fighter.  He is trained by Joe Grier.

Cotto (34-2, 27 KOs), from Caguas, Puerto Rico, has held a world title every year since 2004 and will be looking to extend that streak with his challenge of Foreman.  Puerto Rico’s most exciting fighter, Cotto held the World Boxing Organization (WBO) junior welterweight crown from 2004-2006, successfully defending it six times before vacating it to capture the WBA welterweight title at the end of 2006, a title he held for nearly as long.  He won his second welterweight title in February 2009, knocking out Michael Jennings in the fifth round to become the WBO welterweight champion.  He lost the title in his second defense, last November, to Manny Pacquiao.  Notable scalps on Cotto’s belt include Sugar Shane Mosley, Zab Judah, Joshua Clottey, Paulie Malinaggi, and Demarcus Corley.  Cotto is trained by Emanuel Steward.

LINDSAY, CA, May 7th – He thrilled millions of boxing fans with an aggressive style that earned him a spot on the 1996 US Olympic team and two world junior middleweight championships. And on Saturday, June 19^th, boxing superstar Fernando Vargas will begin his quest to bring the next generation of stars to fight fans, as he joins with long time fight promoter Roy Englebrecht and presents his first event as a promoter – “Melee at McDermont” – at the state of the art McDermont Field House in Lindsay, California.

At a Friday, May 7^th Noon Press Conference at McDermont Field House, Vargas announced the main event for this historic card, which is the first ever professional boxing event in Lindsay (population 15,000), and will feature former world champion Martin “El Gallo” Castillo looking to extend his two fight winning streak when he battles former IBA world titlist Vernie Torres in a super bantamweight main event.

Also in action will be two of Lindsay’s own, as lightweight Rigo Espinoza and welterweight Stephen Rubalcava make their professional debuts in four round action.

“I’m very excited and look forward to bringing a class act and a Hollywood type show to Lindsay,” said Vargas. “After attending Fight Promoter University last November I knew that I wanted my new company, Vargas Entertainment Promotions, to get into the fight promotions business. Now being able to partner with such a respected promoter as Roy Englebrecht, I am confident that fight fans will witness an event that will be the talk of Lindsay and Tulare County for years!”

“Melee at McDermont”, a hard-hitting night of professional boxing, will be co-promoted by Vargas Entertainment Promotions and Roy Englebrecht Promotions. Tickets, priced at $75, $40 and $25, can be purchased online at www.meleeatmcdermont.com and at the McDermont Field House office Monday thru Friday. Special VIP Melee Suites that are all inclusive are also being offered for this show at $600 per suite, and include 10 tickets and unlimited food and drink.

One of the most exciting fighters in the game today, Mexico City native Martin Castillo (35-3, 18 KOs) is a former 1996 Mexican Olympian who repeated his amateur success in the pros when he won the WBA super flyweight title in 2004. Castillo defended his crown four times before an upset loss in 2006, and he has since won five of his last six bouts, including two in a row following his return from a year-long layoff.

A native of Davao City in the Philippines, southpaw Vernie Torres (27-12, 15 KOs) has been battling it out with the best for nearly 14 years.  Torres has faced the likes of Mike Oliver, Gary Stark Jr., and Jose Navarro, but his crowning glory came in January of 2003, when he stopped Julio Coronel in ten rounds to win the IBA bantamweight title. Now looking to recapture that championship form, Torres is expecting a big night on June 19^th.

In the “Melee at McDermont” co-main event, it will be a six round Bay Area brawl when Oakland’s Tony Hirsch (11-3-1, 5 KOs) takes on Fresno’s Loren Myers (7-7-1, 2 KOs) in a middleweight match. Hirsch, a former Oakland Raiders cornerback has won two in a row, including a decision victory over veteran contender Jose Celaya last November, but he will be tested by the always tough Myers, who has been in with top prospects Dion Savage and Matt Korobov in the last year.

Hometown heroes Rigo Espinoza and Stephen Rubalcava will take their leap into the punch for pay ranks on June 19^th when they square off against Cesar Flores (0-1) and Maurice Slade (0-2-1), respectively.

“I found out what the city of Lindsay was doing with their awesome venture the McDermont Field House about a year ago, and just knew it would work for boxing,” said co promoter Roy Englebrecht. “Add to the mix the name of Fernando Vargas and I know the Melee at McDermont will become the premier fight series in the Central Valley, both for boxing and for mixed martial arts shows we will also be promoting”

Opening the event will be bantamweight four rounder pitting Fresno’s Mike Ruiz (1-0) against Cudahay’sLuis Lucas (0-1).

During his impressive streak, Garcia has captured the Caribbean Boxing Federation interim welterweight title and the Texas welterweight title.

Israeli World Boxing Association Champion Yuri Foreman will run a boxing clinic for 35 children of the “Police Boxing Program for Kids”.  While Yuri Foreman has his mind set on his world title defense against Miguel Cotto at Yankee Stadium on June 5, tomorrow, he will take a break from his rigorous training to give 35 young boxers some personal trainer tips and pointers. The master class, organized in collaboration with the Israeli Consulate in NYand the NY Police Boxing Program for Kids, is intended to expose the amateur boxers to the challenges of the professional world.

“I’m excited for the opportunity to team up with the representatives of my homeland and give back to the community. I started boxing at a very young age and it taught me discipline and respect” said Foreman. “Boxing is not just throwing punches in the air, it’s about staying focused mentally. I believe that through boxing these children will become not only stronger but smarter.”

“We’re glad to join Yuri Foreman once again in giving back to the people of New York.
