Miguel Cotto looks to earn the biggest victory of his career when he defends his WBA Welterweight Title against Zab Judah live on HBO PPV from Madison Square Garden in New York. Cotto’s been an unstoppable force in the Welterweight division, but Judah has the speed, the power, and the confidence to take down the Puerto Rican sensation.
Cotto (29-0, 24 KO’s) is one of the top, if not the best, body punchers in boxing today. With a deadly and creative boxing style he’s quickly moved up the ranks of the Welterweight division. But even as the WBA Welterweight champion, many feel that Cotto has never faced a formidable opponent. Critics not how Cotto he has shown signs of weakness against no name opponents. It’s that reason why many “experts” believe that Cotto’s first loss will come tonight against Judah. Regardless, Cotto has never let the words of his critics stop him before and plans on silencing his critics once and for all. As for his plans with Zab; he hopes to close the book on Zab Judah’s career while starting a new chapter for his own.
Judah (34-4, 25 KO’s) at one time was thought to be the next great Welterweight boxer. Things were on track for Judah to become a star, until a lost to Kostya Tszyu put a halt to his hall of fame plans. Since the 2003 lost to Tszyu, Judah’s career has been turbulent. He was suspended for six months for going after referee Jay Nady after the Tszyu fight. After revenging a loss to Cory Spinks in 2005, he lost the title again to unknown Carlos Baldomir. Last year, his riot-starting low blow against Floyd Mayweather Jr. cost him $250,000 and suspended him from boxing for a year.
Judah’s second fight back can save his career. If he can stay focused for thirty-six minutes, then he has a chance at defeating Cotto. The problem is that many feel he can’t stay focused for a whole fight. His mouth has done enough talking; now it’s time to show the world that he bite is just as loud as his bark.
One thing is for sure: Cotto will be focused. So will all the boxing fans, experts, writers, and everyone one else who will be in attendance or watching live on HBO PPV. Don’t forget to catch the under card, as Bobby Pacquiao takes on Humberto Soto. Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. will also be on the fight card as he takes on Grover Wiley. The action starts at 9pm ET/ 6pm PT.
