If you are planning on watching the Calzaghe-Manfredo match tonight on HBO, do not click more. If you want to know what happened, go on.
Joe Calzaghe earned a third round TKO victory over Peter Manfredo to earn his 20th consecutive successful title defense. In front of a home crowd of over 35,000 fans, Calzaghe (43-0, 32 KO’s) took control of the fight in the second round by out-boxing the former reality TV boxing star. In the third, Calzaghe had Manfredo (26-4, 12 KO’s) up against the ropes and continued to throw and land a sequence of unanswered punches. Manfredo failed to throw one punch during Calzaghe’s attack and continued to take punishment until referee Terry O’ Connor stepped in and put an end to the fight at the 1:30 mark. The stoppage seemed a bit premature and though many fans feel that the fight shouldn’t have ended, there was no doubt that Calzaghe was the much superior fighter in the ring.
