Las Vegas, NV – In just a few hours, the pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather Jr. (38-0, 24KO’s) and the undefeated British sensation Ricky Hatton (43-0, 31KO’s) will meet for the last time in pre-fight ceremonies during their weigh-in at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
In what has become the second promotional success for Golden Boy Promotion in one year involving Floyd Mayweather, the hype and buzz surrounding this fight has been huge. HBO decided to continue the award-winning series 24/7 Mayweather-Hatton while endorsements from major corporations poured in.
It is expected that nearly 20,000 British fans will flock to Las Vegas to cheer on Hatton as he faces the biggest challenge of is remarkable and unblemished career. Has the Golden Boy created the ultimate hype in Ricky Hatton, or is the Hitman truly a threat to the Pretty Boy.
With the exception of only a handful of fights, Ricky Hatton has remained on UK soil. It wasn’t until Hatton defeated the highly regarded Kostya Tszyu, in a masterful performance, propelling him among the best in the welterweight division. His performance against Tszyu marked the Hitman as a smothering, non-stop action, body-shot machine. In June of this year, Hatton displayed his body work with a punishing left hook sending Mexican Jose Luis Castillo to the canvas in a 4th round knock-out of the only fighter that has ever been considered to give Mayweather a difficult time.
The next time these two champions will see each other will be on Saturday night where sparks will fly as both undefeated fighters will put their records and titles on the line.
While most boxing aficionados know, Mayweather is the far superior athlete, with both the height and reach advantage, it is difficult to envision a Hatton decision against the king of the ring. However, if Hatton can perform the way he did against Tszyu with a barrage of body punches and non-stop forward smothering attack, trapping the ever tricky Mayweather, there is a chance, albeit a small chance, that Hatton hurts Mayweather.
Predictions are forthcoming Saturday Morning.
