HBO Triple Header – Margarito vs. Williams, Gatti vs. Gomez, Cintron vs. Matthysse

Los Angeles, CA (July 13th) – Antonio Margarito defends his WBO Welterweight Championship against number one contender Paul Williams Saturday night from the Home Depot Center in Carson, California. Margarito accepted the fight after turning down a unification title bout with WBA Champion Miguel Cotto. HBO will televise the fight as a part of a tripleheader live at 9pm ET/6pm PT.

Considered the most feared man in boxing, Margarito (34-4, 24 KO’s) is the longest reigning Welterweight champion, successfully defending his title for five years. But even after five years, Margarito has been unable to land a big-name fight. Everything seemed set in stone for Margarito to fight Miguel Cotto until Margarito backed out of the fight last second and instead took the fight with Williams. The change caused a bit of a legal situation between Goosen Promotions and Top Rank, but it was settled. Margarito is one fight away from the biggest fight of his career. If he defeats Williams, a pay-per-view showdown in New York with Miguel Cotto awaits. Can Margarito step up and prove that he is the star everyone in boxing expects him to be?
Williams (32-0, 24 KO’s) has his own championship plans. A tall southpaw with power, Williams has knocked out his last five opponents. Williams can earn himself a unification fight with Cotto later this year but that’s easier said than done. Experience is the biggest factor for Williams coming into the fight. He’s fought relative unknowns for all his career and has never had the pressure of carrying an HBO card that includes Arturo Gatti on it.
3,000 miles away, Artuto Gatti returns to the ring on when he challenges rugged brawler Alfonso Gomez of “The Contender” in a 10 round bout from Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, NJ. Down the street, IBF Welterweight Champion Kermit Cintron will defend his crown against IBF #7 ranked contender and mandatory challenger Walter Matthysse in a 12 round co-feature bout held at Caesars Atlantic City
Make sure to catch the triple header card Saturday night live on HBO starting at 3pm ET/6pm PT starting in Atlantic City, New Jersey and ending in Carson, California.
