Introducing to you: The Real Legend Killer! Bernard Hopkins (47-4-1) won the IBO Light Heavyweight Title tonight in a lop-sided victory over Antonio Tarver (24-4).

In what might be Bernard Hopkins final, and most impressive, fight of his career, Hopkins showed why he is one of the best pound-for-pound boxers of all time. As a three-to-one underdog, Hopkins showed no fatigue from having to gain 14 pounds and easily controlled the 12 round championship bout. Coming out more aggressive than usual, Hopkins strategically wore down Tarver, easily dominating every single round of the fight. In the fifth round, Hopkins recorded a knocked down on Tarver when a right hand connected Tarver cleanly and forced Tarver back, with only his left glove keeping Tarver from landing on his butt.

With this victory, Hopkins could claim title as being the real “Legend Killer”. Impressive victories over Felix Trinidad, Oscar De La Hoya, and, now this victory over, Tarver shows how impressive of a fighter Hopkins, who never really got the attention as others received, is.

After the fight, Tarver, a man who hates hearing excuses, seemed to throw out excuses of his own. Stating that Hopkins wasn’t the reason for his inability to get something going, said, “Today, I just woke up, and knew it wasn’t my day.”

What’s in the future for both fighters? After the fight, Hopkins went over to HBO commentator, and Jermain Taylor trainer, Emmanuelle Stewart, and told him to tell Taylor to be a great Middleweight champion, and to respect the Middleweight division. But, Larry Merchant refreshed Hopkins that Hopkins had stated that he would take a $20 million offer if it was presented to him. Where would he get that kind of money? A Roy Jones Jr., if he can past his fight with Prince Badi Ajamu, versus Hopkins fight could bring in that kind of money for both fighters. Tarver seemed too dejected to think about another fight, throwing out hints that this may have been the last fight of his career. We, here at touchgloves.com, feel that Tarver should take time off and possibly work his way down in weight and enter the Super Middleweight Division. A fight with Joe Calzaghe may be the only big fight left for Tarver.

touchgloves.com Note: Our cards had the fight 118-109 in favor of Hopkins.
