Boxing.... Who Really Cares? Part I

If I asked you, “Do you know who Manny Pacquiao is?” would you be able to answer? What about Miguel Cotta, or Antonio Tarver? No, they’re not soccer players, basketball players or baseball players. In reality, these men are elite professional boxers, considered “Pound-for-Pound” the greatest in the world. Why is it, that while people seem to know so much about the worlds of professional basketball, baseball, and soccer, they tend to know very little or nothing at all when it comes to boxing?

Toney-Rahman a Draw!

In what was meant to be the first in a series of fights to bring clarity to the heavyweight division, WBC Champion Hasim Rahman (41-5-2-33 KO`s) kept his title when the judges declared the fight a draw. One judge had the fight 117-111 and the two others had it equal at 114-114. James Toney (69-4-3-43 KO`s) came in looking out-of-shape and out of breath after the second round.

Although Toney was off-balanced and unable to put his combinations together, Rahman failed to put anything meaningful together to put Toney away. Rahman was very composed through the entire fight firing his jab at a rate that would make any heavyweight happy.

European Invasion of America

You can add another former Champions name’s to the list of people who probably won’t be visiting England anytime soon; Jeff Lacy.

The European invasion of American boxing seems to be in full effect. Both Ricky Hatton and Joe Calzaghe were able to lure title fights to their native country and make the best of their opportunities. Hatton was able to punish Kosta Tszyu for 10 rounds, before the light welterweight champ was unable to answer the bell for the 11th round. And last week, Calzaghe beat Lacy in what was a one sided beating, sending Lacy to his first professional loss. Chris Byrd hopes to break the spell when he goes to Russia to fight Vladimir Klitschko next month.
