Quick Hits: Mayorga Positively Cheats, Haseem Sentenced…

What do Fernando Vargas and Ricardo Mayorga have in common? They’ve both been knocked out by Oscar De La Hoya while on steroids.

- What do Fernando Vargas and Ricardo Mayorga have in common? They’ve both been knocked out by Oscar De La Hoya while on steroids.

On Thursday, The Nevada State Athletic Commission had stated that Mayorga, the former WBC super middleweight champion, had tested positive for diuretic Furosemide, also known as Lasix, after his fight with De La Hoya. Lasix serves two purposes: to cover steroid use and to help with weight loss. Keith Kizer, lawyer for the commission, also stated that Mayorga has 20 days to respond to the positive test, which would then setup a hearing with the Athletic Commission.

Coincidentally, another Nicaraguan boxer named Rosendo Alvarez had also tested positive for the Lasix. Alvarez was suspended for a year and fined for $2,000. Allan Hopper, a spokesperson for Don King Promotions, had questioned whether there may be a physician in Nicaragua who is recommending Lasix to boxers in Nicaragua.

Mayorga is at risk of losing his license and a portion of his purse from the fight, $2 million and a portion of the pay-per-view revenue.

- In other boxing news, Prince Naseem Hameed, former world featherweight champion, has been sentenced to 15 months in prison for a drunken driving incident in Sheffield, England. Along with his prison term, the judge suspended Hameed’s driving license for 4 years.

His accident caused several injuries to other drivers. The most severe was to a man who broke both his arms and a leg. Hameed, who had been clocked at 90 mph before the crash, had pleaded guilty to the dangerous driving.

Hameed’s last big fight was in April of 2001, where he suffered his first professional loss to Marco Antonio Barrera in Las Vegas, Nevada. In his last fight in 2002, he was booed out of the ring after a controversial victory over Manuel Calvo in London.
