Will It Be "Lights Out" for "The Nigerian Nightmare"?

On Saturday night, Showtime will be featuring James "Lights Out" Toney in a heavyweight bout against Samuel "The Nigerian Nightmare" Peter, in what is certain to be a fight worth watching. Toney is a trash-talking slickster who is the most fundamentally sound heavyweight of recent years, and this match-up with the heavy-handed, un-polished, and meagerly skilled Peter will provide a clash in styles that I`m hoping will prove to be exciting.

Briggs Back in the Heavyweight Title Picture?

News is starting to spread that Shannon Briggs could finally be in line for a Heavyweight Title Fight with Heavyweight Champ Wladimir Klitschko. Rumor is that the fight will take place on November 11th in Madison Square Garden. It was rumored that an Oleg Maskaev and Klitschko fight was to take place, but with the recent news that Maskaev has a broken elbow, Briggs could possibly be back in the big picture. It’s interesting to see if Klitschko will take this fight, or rest, and wait for the winner of the Toney-Peter Heavyweight Fight on Sep. 2nd.

Paul Williams: Thomas Hearns reborn?

Is Paul "The Punisher" Williams the second-coming of Thomas "The Hitman" Hearns? It`s probably too early to say such a thing, but the long, lanky, hard-hitting welterweight looked impressive as he dissected and demolished the once-great Sharmba Mitchell.

Holyfield Wins Comeback Fight

DALLAS (AP) -- Evander Holyfield began his latest comeback looking more like "The Real Deal" than he has in years.

Holyfield rocked Jeremy Bates into the ropes late in the first round, withstood a few hard shots -- including one to his face -- early in the second, then cornered and pummeled his insurance-salesman foe to earn a technical knockout with 4 seconds left in the round, capturing his first victory since June 2002.

Holyfield-Bates Ready To Fight on Fox

If the State of Texas will allow Evander Holyfield (35-8-2, 25 KO’s) to fight in the ring, then they’ll let anything happen. Holyfield will take on Jeremy Bates (21-11-1, 18 KO’s) this Friday night live from the American Airlines Arena in Dallas Texas. Make sure to avoid Fox Sports Net from 8pm on, unless you think it’s okay for a 43 year old man, who is already showing signs of brain damage, to get beaten up for 10 long rounds.

Maskaev TKO’s Rahman, Wins WBC Title!

Wow, wow, wow! That’s all I could think of after Oleg Maskaev (33-5, 26 KO’s) stood above a battered Hasim Rahman (41-6-2, 33 KO’s) and became the new WBC Heavyweight Champion of the World. The Thomas and Mack Center was going crazy during the 12th and final round, which saw Maskaev bring Europe another Heavyweight Title.

Heavyweight Hopefulls - Rahman vs. Maskaev

As boxing fans, it is hard for us to hear others decry the fall from greatness of the heavyweight division. While the current heavyweight field may do little to inspire some, I still love to see the two-hundred-pound-plus dreadnoughts battle it out. There have always been dull fights between lumbering, unskilled oafs, but there are also some heavyweights capable of putting on a good show. Next Saturday night, on HBO PPV, we`re all hoping to see the later, not the former.
