2006 Year In Review: Final Review

In July, we were treated to a rematch between Shane Mosley and Fernando Vargas. The two fighters had fought earlier in the year, but a rematch was expected as the first fight proved nothing. Mosley used his speed and quickness to break down the bigger, but slower, Vargas. Mosley sent Vargas down and out with a solid left-hook in the 6th round; It was vintage De La Hoya style. Mosley career was now back and Vargas would have to sit back and think about continuing his boxing career.

For months leading up to the fight, Mayorga had verbally insulted De La Hoya’s family, and De La Hoya would use the abuse as fuel for his highly anticipated return.

2006 Year In Review: Part II

One month later and just down the strip at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino, we were treated with an attractive, but still questionable bout between one-time pound-for-pound king Sugar Shane Mosely and Ferocious Fernando Vargas in the light middleweight division. Many considered both fighters over the hill and amongst the less elite fighters in the sport. Both fighters knew that it was either win or retire.

Cotto-Margarito In June?

Miguel Cotto and Antonio Margarito are set to face each other next June in New York at Madison Square Garden. Both fighters Welterweight Titles will be on the line, with the winner to possibly fight whoever comes out of the Winky Wright, Oscar De La Hoya, and Floyd Mayweather Jr. triangle. That fight would more than likely take place in early 2008.

But before Cotto and Margarito can face each other, they must both face mandatory challengers. Cotto will fight Oktay Urkal in March and Margarito will fight Paul Williams sometime around March as well.
