Road to the Olympics: Robert Herrera

PORTER RANCH, CA, MARCH 30 - 16-year-old Robert Herrera has a dream to compete in the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. A native of Porter Ranch, CA, Herrera is 6'1" and weighs 190 pounds. Last summer, Herrera won the junior golden gloves district at Lincoln Park in the super heavyweight division (201+ pounds).

Currently being trained by John Bray in San Fernando, Herrera has an amatuer record of 11-1 after only one year of fighting and training experience. His only loss coming against the National Silver Gloves Champion whom has five-times as many fights as Herrera at the time. Since his loss, Herrera has won eight consecutive fights.

Herrera's focus and determination have allowed him to excel both inside and outside the ring. Last summer, Herrera won the Junior Golden Gloves District at Lincoln Park in the super heavyweight division (201+ pounds). A few months later, he won the Junior Olympic Senior Division at the National Police Athletic League in Oxnard, CA. Just this month, Herrera became the Los Angeles District Champion at 201 pounds in a Golden Gloves Tournament by beating an opponent six years older than him.

Herrera will now step up his level of competition in a new round of Golden Glove Tournaments where he will face opponents between the ages of 17 - 34. Herrera will be fighing on Saturday March 30th at 7pm at the Lincoln Park Recreational Center in Los Angeles against the 201-pound district champ from San Diego. The winner will be crowned the Southern California Regional Champion and will go on to fight for the State Title in their respected weight class.
