Diaz Unifies Titles Destroys Freitas

WBA Lightweight Champion Juan Diaz took on WBO Lightweight Champion Acelino Freitas in what was expected by most to be an exciting battle between a rising star and an accomplished veteran. Diaz (32-0, 15KO's) pressured Freitas (38-1, 31 KO's) from the opening bell forcing Freitas against the ropes. Once Freitas was against the ropes, Diaz would unload powerful combinations landing with accuracy and precision.

Freitas looked tired and discouraged after round five during which he was stunned and badly hurt. Diaz continued to apply pressure landing strong left jabs which stopped Freitas from being able to set his punches. Freitas took a significant amount of punishment in rounds seven and eight. Freitas didn't answer the bell for round nine.

Diaz who is only 23, said that he is looking to fight any of the champions out there and he looks for a dream fight against Manny Paquiao.

Soklin's Corner: Zab Judah: Boxing's Latest Circus

tyson.jpgI have to admit my bias. I am a huge Mike Tyson fan. Sure Tyson had tremendous punching power and in his youth and was one of the all-time great heavyweights. I am a Tyson fan for a different reason. I enjoyed the sideshow, the circus side of "Iron Mike." The post-prison Tyson. I am a fan of the children-eating Mike Tyson, the one with the impregnable defense and impetuous style. I like the Mike Tyson who refuses to speak to woman without fornicating with them first. Mike Tyson is fading into Bolivian, which is sad and unfortunate. But maybe, just maybe we have a little Mike Tyson in Zab Judah.

Weekend Predictions: 4-7-2007

banner-3.jpg The eagerly awaited fight predictions for this weekends big fights are in. Feel free to leave a comment with your predictions below. Remember HBO will televise Peter Manfredo v.s Joe Calzaghe, shown live at 5pm/ET and once again replay at 10pm/ET. Showtime will show Diego Corrales in his debut at the welterweight division against Joshua Clottey. The Corrales fight will begin at 10pm/ET on Showtime.

Joe Calzaghe v.s. Peter Manfredo (HBO)

Farz B. - Unanimous Decision for Calzaghe. I think Manfredo lacks big fight experience and the hometown crowd will be a big factor for Calzaghe. Manfredo will put up a great fight, but in the end, Calzaghe will come up victorious.

Korosh - In a shocking upset, Manfredo by KO. I think Calzaghe is looking past Manfredo. The Contender realizes his dream.

R. Maiker - I usually like to go with the underdog but Calzaghe is too experienced. Hometown advantage for Calzaghe, big fight credentials, speed and power all in favor of Calzaghe. I will be rooting for Manfredo, but I predict Calzaghe by TKO.

Diego Corrales v.s. Joshua Clottey (SHO)

Farz B. - Corrales by 7th round TKO

Korosh - Corrales will have the same trouble as Ricky Hatton by moving up in weight. Corrales will however pull through the victory.

R. Maiker - Corrales will come out guns blazing. He should be ok moving up in weight. Corrales will let his hands go. Corrales by TKO.

Roy Jones Jr. v.s. Jermaine Taylor - September 21st!

PENSACOLA, FL, APRIL 6 - Former Pound-for-Pound King Roy Jones Jr. revealed on ESPN's Friday Night Fights that he is expecting to take a tune-up fight in June, followed by a Middleweight Championship against current undisputed Champion Jermaine Taylor on HBO. HBO has a September 21st 2007 date reserved for the meeting between the two.

Jones Jr. said that the potential match-up with Anthony Hanshaw fell apart because he did not want to have Gary Shaw promote his fight and that it had nothing to do with Hanshaw. "Hanshaw can come down to the Gulf in June and I'll pay him what he was going to get paid and we can fight" said Jones Jr.

If the fight with Taylor takes place, Jones Jr. will be coming down to the Middleweight division where he has not fought in over ten years.
