When is it time for a boxer to retire. For most great boxers, the answer is often revealed too late. Mohammed Ali, Sugar Ray Leonard, Roy Jones Jr., all great boxers of their time, refused to retire until a few uncharacteristic loses to fighters who at one point wouldn’t even be considered challenges.
Now enter, Pretty Boy Floyd Money Mayweather, the pound-for-pound king and arguably the best fighter of our time. Coming off the heels of his masterful performance against Britain’s Ricky Hatton, is at the top of his game. There are no fighters in any weight class that have the speed, skill, and ring generalship that Mayweather does.
In his last four fights, Mayweather has fought and easily beat the best fighters in boxing: Arturo Gatti, Zab Judah, Carlos Baldomir, Oscar de la Hoya. The media however, finds it easy to consider these great fighters second-rate, after Mayweather has dispensed of them.
How can you consider these fighters great, and then claim they are sub-par after the best fighter in boxing today disposes of them? The answer is easy: Floyd Mayweather is so gifted, so fast, so well trained that he makes the best fighters in boxing look mediocre.
There will always be other fighters who will claim to be the best and have the ability to beat Floyd Mayweather. Miguel Cotto, Paul Williams, Antonio Margarito, just to name a few. But the reality is that Mayweather is above and beyond these fighters both in terms of skill and the ability to make each bout an event, a super-fight.
Mayweather is a boxing superstar, an icon. I have no doubt that the only fighter who can successfully defeat Mayweather, is the same fighter who defeated Mohammed Ali, Sugar Ray Leonard, Roy Jones Jr. and the countless other boxing greats who fought past their prime: themselves.
