Leon, Guanajuato, Mexico - Julio Cesar Chavez Jr will go into his biggest fight, taking on Jose Celaya of Salinas, Calif., on Top Rank's "Latin Fury" Pay-Per-View fight card here on Saturday, Feb. 9. "Julio is coming off a great victory, but he now has a bigger challenge in Jose Celaya," said Bob Arum of Top Rank.
Chavez, 21, has a record of 34-0-1 with 27 KOs. He is coming off his best pro win, a stoppage of tough Ray Sanchez before 6,077 fight fans in his hometown of Albuquerque, N.M.
Chavez will now take on a Celaya, 26, who has a record of 31-3 with 16 knockouts.
Celaya, 26, has won five straight bouts and says he has the skill and the firepower to take on Chavez Jr.
"Chavez Jr is good, but I have a lot of plusses and advantages - my experience, speed and skills. They (fight fans) are going to be surprised when they see me in Mexico. My plan is to dominate this fight, win, and move on the bigger things."
Chavez Jr. is the oldest son of the legendary 'El Gran Campeon Mexicano' - former three-time world champion and future Hall of Famer Julio Cesar Chavez. The father walked his son to the the ring in his biggest fight, when he took on Ray Sanchez in Albuquerque on Dec. 1.
"I'm very happy about the boxing career of my son," Chavez said. "He is very serious about his career and he is always 100 percent prepared."
Chavez Jr will train in Culiacan, Mexico. Celaya will do his workouts in his hometown of Salinas, Calif. His chief trainer is Sam Garcia.
There will be four televised bouts on the Latin Fury Pay-Per-View card. The suggested retail is $34.95.
