Mayweather Backs Off of Drug Testing Demands – Wants to fight Pacquiao

In realizing that the potential super-fight between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. on March 13, 2010 was about to fall apart, Golden Boy Promotions, who represents Floyd Mayweather Jr. said today that they are willing to look at less stringent drug testing protocols in order to make the fight.

A fight between these two would be the biggest financial fight in the history of boxing.  Mayweather Jr., and Golden Boy have made unreasonable demands according to Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum.  Never in the history of boxing has the US Anti-Doping Agency had any involvement, according to Top Rank.

It appears that Mayweather’s posturing and demands have put him in a vulnerable negotiating position.  Pacquiao’s team has already made an offer to Paulie Malignaggi to fight on March 13, 2010 if the Mayweather fight cannot be made.

Basically, the Mayweather team wants random drug testing using both blood and urine samples.  So long as it is random and blood is used (a practice that the Nevada State Athletic Commission has never used) the Mayweather camp will go ahead with the fight.  Originally, Mayweather was demanding that the United States Anti-Doping Agency handle the tests.  They are now agreeing to use an alternative agency.

However, team Pacquiao has agreed to three blood tests.  Once before the promotional kick-off, another 30-days before the fight and another immediately after the fight.  The 30-day period before the fight is what seems to be the biggest hang-up for both sides. Pacquiao feels that this is too close to the fight and that it may affect him and Mayweather’s side feels that it should be done randomly, even up to the day before the fight.

Mayweather’s team is planning on going to the Nevada State Athletic Commission and explaining their position in hopes of the Commission backing up their proposed random blood testing.  The problem is that by the time all of this is sorted out, it will be too late to promote the largest fight in boxing history.

Mayweather Out Malignaggi In for March 13, 2010 Pacquiao Bout

Since the recent negotiations between Mayweather and Pacquiao have hit a snag, Bob Arum of Top Rank has offered current NABO Champion Paulie Malignaggi the date of March 13, 2010 to face Manny Pacquiao at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

The super-fight between Mayweather-Pacquiao would be the highest grossing boxing match of all-time, however both sides have drawn a line in the sand.  Malignaggni just came of a big win over prospect and rising star Juan Diaz.

One has to ask whether this is all posturing for negotiations or not.  One thing is clear, if both sides continue to disagree and not finalize a deal, there will be no realistic time to promote a fight of this magnitude.

Manny Pacquiao to Sue Floyd Mayweather Jr., Sr., and Golden Boy Promotions

The recent negotiations between Bob Arum and Golden Boy Promotions in a potential super-fight have hit a bump.  The main hold-up is Floyd Mayweather Jrs.’ demand that the fighters be subjected to random blood and urine testing for performance enhancing drugs.  Such testing Mayweather is demanding to be done by the US Anti-Doping Agency, something that has never before been done in boxing.

Floyd Mayweather Sr. has openly accused Manny Pacquiao of using steroids.  Pacquiao has never failed a drug test.

In a statement from the Phillipines Manny Pacquiao said ”Enough is enough.  I have tried to just brush it off as a mere pre-fight ploy but I think they have gone overboard.  I say to Floyd Mayweather Jr. don’t be a coward and face me in the ring, mano-a-mano and shut your big, pretty mouth, so we can show the world who is the true king of the ring.”

Most consider Mayweather’s demand as a direct accusation that Pacquiao has used and is using steroids and other performance enhancing drugs.

Pacquiao has decided to file a civil lawsuit against Floyd Mayweather, Jr., Floyd Mayweather Sr., and Golden Boy Promotions.  ”I have instructed my promoter, Bob Arum, to help me out in the filing of the case as soon as possible because I have had people coming over to me now asking if I really take performance-enhancing drugs and I have cheated my way into becoming the No. 1 boxer in the world.  I maintain and assure everyone that I have not used any form or kind of steroids and that my way to the top is a result of hard work and a lot of blood spilled from my past battles in the ring, not outside of it.  I have no idea what steroids look like and my fear in God has kept me safe and victorious through all these years.”

Arum Tells Mayweather “Go to Hell”

Bob Arum of Top Rank, who promotes Manny Pacquiao tells Floyd Mayweather to “go to hell” in reference to their unreasonable demands.  Mayweather is demanding that the potential superfight that is penciled in for March 13, 2010 be subjected to random drug testing for both fighters and be conducted by the United States Anti-Doping Agency.

Arum says that Pacquiao is willing to have the same type of random drug testing that has been used in NFL, NBA and other professional sports and that the US Anti-Doping Agency’s methods are questionable.

Mayweather v. Pacquiao Almost Set for March 13th in Las Vegas

Negotiations between Pound-4-Pound king Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather have heated up.  It appears that the terms of the contract have almost been finalized and the venue set for MGM Grand in Las Vegas.  Pacquiao is represented by Bob Arum’s Top Rank and Mayweather by Oscar de la Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions.

The fight is to take place at 147lbs (welterweight).  Mayweather is demanding that the two fighters subject themselves to the US Anti-Doping Agency which overseas Olympic athletes.  The procedures would potentially open the fighters having their blood and urine randomly tested.  Theoretically, the fighters could have their blood drawn the day before the fight.  Such a request is unprecedented in boxing.  No fighter or fight has ever been subjected to the US Anti-Doping Agency drug testing.

Floyd Mayweather Sr. openly accused Pacquiao of using steroids earlier this year.
