Vic Darchinyan’s Letter to Mares: Congratulations Abner

“It was very disappointing for me to lose the fight against a good young fighter like Abner Mares. Congratulations to Abner, he is a tough kid who fought a great fight. Even after winning seven world titles I have learned something valuable and that is not to leave the decision in the hands of judges. The only negative thing I have to say about this fight is that we should be talking about what a great war Abner and I had, and not talking about the way the fight was over-refereed. I have never had a point taken off me in all my fights and I am sure Abner hasn’t ever had a point taken from him. Let us fight. We go into the ring and we fight for our lives. We should have been allowed to fight our natural fights. Instead both of us were always being told to do this and that. I think the referee started to confuse himself in addition to confusing us.

It is hard to have a split decision loss when I thought I won. But now looking back at it, some people thought Abner won, some people thought I won, and a lot of people thought it was a draw. All I know is that I fought a great fighter who fought a great fight and I fought a great fight. That’s what happens when everyone you speak to says it was a war in the ring and a great fight and everyone has a different opinion on who won. I am angry that I lost but I am not angry at Abner Mares. Abner was respectful to me from start to finish. I am just angry that I allowed the fight to get to stage where it was so close.

We had a great fight and I hope in the near future we can fight again. It was good to fight Abner. I think Abner is a lot like me — risking everything for our fans. Our fans wouldn’t want to see us fighting bums like other fighters do. We didn’t have to fight each other and the same goes for King Kong Agbeko and Yonnhy Perez. We are here for our fans and without them we would be nowhere.

I can’t wait to fight Perez, I know it’s going to be a war and I know I won’t make the same mistake again and leave my fate in the hands of the judges. I will make sure to go out and finish the job I started.

Sincerely,

Vic Darchinyan

Bernard Hopkins Arrives in Quebec

December 14, 2010 (Québec City, Canada) – Legendary future Hall of Famer and Two-Division World Champion Bernard Hopkins arrived in Québec City, Canada today, moving one step closer to his quest to defeat WBC, Ring Magazine and IBO Light Heavyweight World Champion Jean Pascal and become the oldest fighter in the history of boxing to win a prominent world title.

“This goes beyond being a champion,” Hopkins said when he arrived at Jean-Lesage International Airport in Québec City.  “This is a grand opportunity.  It is a situation I don’t take for granted.  Saturday night you will see something unique.  A 45-year-old man in a young man’s body is an amazing thing.  I am here to prove that I can still compete and that I am something special.”

The age-defying, 45-year-old Hopkins will challenge Pascal THIS SATURDAY, Dec. 18, LIVE on SHOWTIME® at 10 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast) from the Pepsi Coliseum in Québec City.

B-Hop ready for Younger Pascal!

Quebec City, Canada (December 13) When Bernard “The Executioner” Hopkinsfaces WBC, Ring Magazine and IBO Light Heavyweight Champion Jean Pascal on December 18 at the Pepsi Coliseum in Quebec City, Canada live on SHOWTIME® in the U.S. and on pay-per-view in Canada, he will be 28 days shy of his forty-sixth birthday.  If Hopkins defeats Pascal, he will become the oldest fighter in the history of the sport to win a significant world title, 38 days older than “Big” George Foreman was when he defeated Michael Moorer for the Heavyweight World title on November 5, 1994.

“The difference between me and Foreman is that most people didn’t think Foreman could do it. He was the underdog of all underdogs when he faced Moorer,” Hopkins said.  ”Not only do people think I can win, they think I can win big, and I plan on proving them right.”

Despite his age, Hopkins has shown no signs of slowing down.  He has won five of his last six fights and is no stranger to facing younger opponents with five of his in-ring rivals having been over a decade younger than him during his 22-year career.  The most notable of these was Kelly Pavlik, whom Hopkins defeated on October 18, 2008.  At the time of the Pavlik vs. Hopkins fight, the 17-year age gap between the two foes was the largest of Hopkins’ career, until now.

Because Pascal is six months younger than Pavlik, there is a nearly 18 year age disparity between Hopkins and the Light Heavyweight World Champion Pascal, which is serving as a motivating factor in this fight for “The Executioner.”

“Youth doesn’t bother me,” said Hopkins.  “I have faced youth.  Pascal hasn’t faced someone like me.  He hasn’t faced a legend.  He is hosting me in his country, on his turf, defending his title.  He has a lot to be nervous about on top of the fact that when he looks in the opposite corner on fight night, he is going to see greatness.  I can only add to my legacy.  I can only continue to make history and back-up what I have already accomplished.”

Amir Khan Marcos Maidana Preview

Las Vegas, NV – In what has been a largely anticipated bout, Englishman Amir Khan (23-1, 17)  takes on heavy hitting Marcos Maidana (29-1, 27) from Argentina at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas.  Khan, who is now being trained by Freddie Roach is known for his boxing skills and ability to finish.  Maidana has walked through nearly every opponent knocking-out 27 of 29.

When looking at this bout on paper, one can’t help but notice the lack of quality opponents that Khan has faced.  Largely fighting in Europe, Khan has also been known to have a suspect chin.  In the alternative, Maidana’s most recent victory over top contender and one-time champion DeMarcus Corely certainly puts in at the top of his decision.

Both training camps come into the fight knowing that its a dangerous one for either fighter.  Roach who also trains pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao, says that Khan is a completely different fighter today than he was before joining the Wildcard Gym team.  With strength and conditioning coach Alex Ariza working very closely with Khan, perhaps he’s on his way to becoming the complete fighter.

Khan is favored in the fight, but Maidana certainly is not an opponent to be taken lightly.  Our prediction is that this will certainly not go the distance in an extremely entertaining fight.

Bad Blood brews between Golden Boy and Mosley.

The Animosity between Oscar De La Hoya and Shane Mosley Continues to grow. Last week, Shane Mosley confirmed to touchgloves.com that he had been in independent talks with Top Rank to set up a Spring fight with pound for pound king, Manny Pacquiao. In an interview with fighthype.com, Mosley said he was upset that De la Hoya and Golden Boy Promotions were stepping aside to allow Juan Manuel Marquez to fight Pacquiao, but would not step aside for Mosley. Top rank president has said he considers Mosley a highly marketable opponent for Pacquiao

Now it seems the bad blood continues to grow. Golden Boy has removed  Mosley from its roster of fighters. No mention is made of Mosley as a part owner. Mosley is also irked that De La Hoya has friended his ex wife Jin on Twitter.

This is not the first time a fight has been upset with the way Golden Boy has treated them. Both Winky Wright and Bernard Hopkins spoke out about their frustration with the company.

Mosley hits Pacquiao Jackpot, Fight set for April 2011!

Inside sources revealed that Manny Pacquiao’s next opponent is Sugar Shane Mosley. Top Rank and Mosley have agreed in principle, with minor details to be decided shortly. Mosley has been all over twitter asking for this fight, and it seems that this mega-fight is set for April 16, 2011 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Bob Arum, Pacquiao’s promoter said that Mosely is the biggest fight out there for Pacquiao other than Floyd Mayweather. Sugar Shane is a cross-over athlete and is a house-hold name. He is the front-runner for Manny’s next opponent, said Arum.

Arum is heading to the Philippines to meet with Manny and to present him with the details of the fight in the next 10 days.

More to come…
