The last time Edison Miranda spoke to touchgloves.com he was preparing for his Middleweight clash against current Middleweight Champion Kelly “The Ghost” Pavlik. Miranda (30-2, 26 KO’s) was knocked out by Pavlik in the 7th round of a heavy hitting action packed fight. Since that lost, Miranda has moved up in weight to the Super Middleweight Division, scored impressive back-to-back knockout wins, and is now set to fight Jean Pascal later this year. Touchgloves.com recently caught up with Edison to talk about his plans for the future, Pavlik-Taylor II, and a possible fight with Jeff Lacy.
Hey Edison, thanks for taking time out again to talk to us. How are things going for you personally and professionally?
I am very happy with my first two fights at 168lbs. It is amazing how good I feel in the ring at the higher weight. It was getting more and more difficult making 160lbs, but I never realized how drained I was getting until I faced Pavlik. I don’t see anyone at super middleweight that is going to stop me from getting to the top. My power is going to hurt someone badly!

It’s been a year since we last spoke to you. What lessons have you learned as a boxer in the last year?
Jose Bonilla, my trainer, has been working with me on movement and defense. I am being more patient and wearing down my opponents with my jab and boxing. When I see the opportunity I will go for the kill. When I hit you clean there is no way you are going to stay on your feet.
How has the change from Middleweight to Super Middleweight affected you? Do you feel more comfortable now as Super Middleweight than you were as a Middleweight?
It is night and day. I starting having trouble making the weight before the fight with Howard Eastman. But I saw such great opportunity at 160lbs that I kept pushing myself. Jermain Taylor was in my sights and I wanted to teach him a lesson. HBO kept giving me great fights on short notice and I couldnt say no. At 168lbs I feel like a new man. I do not kill myself to make the weight. This is where I should be fighting.
Everybody knows about your impressive knockout ability, your knockout punch to defeat David Banks earlier this year was incredible, but what are you doing to help improve your defensive skills?

Like I said, we work on this hard in the gym. I think there has been some great improvements already, but I am always learning.
You are set to fight Jean Pascal later this year. What are your thoughts on Jean?
Jean has a very good record and is ranked high. I don’t think he is my league, however. I want to fight the best and prove to the world that I am the true champ at 168lbs. Until they have the courage to face me I will face the highest ranked man that will. Watch them all fall.
I would personally love to see you and American Jeff Lacy go at it in the ring. If you were to get by Pascal, how would you feel about a possible fight against Lacy?
Lacy was at my last fight. He said he wanted to fight me. But when he heard the explosion in the ring and saw David Banks disappear though the ropes, he turned away. I looked at him after the fight and he wouldn’t look me in the eyes. Jeff Lacy is scared of me. He wont even breath my name again.
Jermain Taylor and Kelly Pavlik are fighting their rematch on February 16th. What are your thoughts on the rematch and do you think Pavlik can knockout Taylor again?
If Jermain Taylor brings his heart into the ring I think he can win. He cant fight scared. He blew his chance in the first fight so maybe he learned a lesson. Pavlik is lucky to be where he is. One day he will follow me up to 168lbs and he is going to wish he never did. Time is the only think on your side Kelly. One day I will get my revenge, I guarantee it.
And finally, what are your plans for the year. When December 31st 2008 comes around, where do you see yourself in the Super Middleweight Division?

Edison Miranda will be the champion at 168lbs before the end of this year. If Pascal is my next opponent than I think a title fight will follow. People want to see me fight and they will demand the champions to face me. I am back and I will be stronger then ever.

NEW YORK, NY (May 24, 2007) – World Middleweight Champion Jermain Taylor remains on the top of undefeated middleweight contender Giovanni Lorenzo’s wish list, but there is another fighter that he would like to challenge: Kelly Pavlik.

“I was very impressed by Pavlik’s win over Miranda,” said Lorenzo. “Miranda talked a lot before the fight, but he didn’t deliver. He cared more about Taylor than the guy he had in front of him and Pavlik beat him at his own game. I think me and Pavlik would be bombs away from the opening bell.
“The fact is that Taylor really isn’t interested in fighting middleweights, only built up welterweights. He’ll do to Pavlik what he has done to me and that’s say he wants to fight us then he’ll avoid us . . . especially after his last performance. So it makes logical sense for the two best top 5 rated undefeated middleweights to fight each other for the Peoples’ World Championship. I know HBO would like that fight.”
Lorenzo returns to the ring on June 2 in an off-TV bout against Sterling, IL native Bruce Rumbolz (21-12-2, 15 KO’s) in an 8/10 round middleweight bout. Lorenzo is 23-0, 15 KO’s and has knocked out nine of his last 10 opponents. He is ranked #5 by the WBC and #8 by the IBF.

HOLLYWOOD, FL, May 21 – It was a disappointing Saturday night in Memphis for middleweight contender Edison ‘Pantera’ Miranda as he suffered his first real loss of his career to Kelly Pavlik. But Miranda vows to be back in the ring and better than ever in the future.

“I’m sorry to all my fans for my performance on Saturday night,” said the gracious Miranda. “I let you down, but know that I tried my best with what I had to win the fight. I thank you for all the support you have given me and I promise that I will return to the top and win a world championship for you.”
“I realized the importance of this fight for my career, my fans and most of all, I did not want to disappoint HBO who has been my supporter after the events in Germany. I was faced with adversities that I have never had to deal with in this fight, with my weight,” said Miranda. “All during training camp, no matter how hard I worked the weight did not come off like it had before. I did not eat or drink anything Thursday or Friday and still I had trouble making weight but I did not want to let the network down and my fans around the world. I went into the ring weak and ill, but I gave it my best effort!”
“To Kelly Pavlik, congratulations on your win; it was an honor to be in the ring with a warrior who thinks and fights like you do, and I hope we can fight again in the future. As for my immediate future, I’m going to take a little time off from the gym to relax, and after talking with my team, I’ll decide what the next step will be. Who knows, the next time you see me I may be chasing after a world super middleweight title.
“Know this though, I will be back and better than ever!”

“What a fight. What a fight.” Those words will be heard all around the country. Kelly “The Ghost Pavlik (31-0, 28KO) scored a 7th round stoppage against Edison Miranda (28-2, 24KO) in a electric bout which featured both fighters going toe to toe from the opening bell. With the amazing performance, Pavlik has sent a message to the middleweight division that he is a force to be reckoned with.
- In a boring, slow, unexciting snoozer, Jermain Taylor (27-0-1, 17KO’s) and Cory Spinks danced around the ring for 12 rounds. Spinks (36-4, 11KO’s), methodically walked circles around Taylor from the opening bell, but threw double and triple the amount of punches as Taylor. Jermain looked out of the fight from the onset. His mind may have been on Kelly Pavlik and his massacre of Edison Miranda.

Not much happened in the fight, so there is no much to report. Spinks threw his jab, Taylor threw an occasional punch. And that happened for twelve rounds. A usually calm Emmanul Steward lost his cool towards the end of the fight, pleading with Taylor, “You have to fight. You have to fight.”
The lackluster performance by Taylor leaves even more question marks regarding his career. touchgloves.com had the fight 115-113 for Spinks.

Jermain Taylor defends his WBC and WBO Middleweight titles tonight when he takes on former Light Middleweight Champion Cory Spinks live from the Fedex Forum in Memphis, Tennessee. Spinks is a replacement for “Contender” Champion Sergio Mora after Mora backed out of the fight after becoming unhappy with the location of the fight.

Taylor (26-0-1, 17 KO’s) has held the title of Middleweight King since defeating Bernard Hopkins back in July of 2005. After a draw with Winky Wright, Taylor took on Light Middleweight Kassim Ouma. Taylor would never earn the knockout he had promised his fans. And it was the much smaller Ouma who seemed force the action in the fight. Now, instead of taking on a true Middleweight, Taylor has decided to fight another Light Middleweight in Cory Spinks. Boxing fans aren’t happy, so Taylor must win big. Doesn’t matter how, but he must do it, and it must be in convincing fashion. What awaits Taylor next is a mega-fight with Joe Calzaghe or a title defense against the winner of the Kelly Pavlik-Edison Miranda undercard fight.
After getting knocked out by Zab Judah and losing his Welterweight Titles, Spinks (36-3, 11 KO’s), in his first fight ever at Light Middleweight, won the IBF Light Middleweight Titles in July of 2006. After successfully defending his title against Rodney Jones in February, Spinks decided to take another jump in weight to earn another title in a fourth weight class. In reality, Spinks is really a Welterweight, but with his crafty boxing style, it appears that he can hang in the ring with any boxer, no matter how big they may be. A win may be considered one of the biggest upsets of all time.
Make sure to tune in tonight at 10:15pm EST/7:15pm PST live on HBO from the Memphis, Tennessee.
Make sure to catch the explosive undercard as Edison Miranda takes on Kelly Pavlik for a chance to take on the winner of the Jermain Taylor-Cory Spinks fight.

“I’m concerned that the fans of Memphis are paying a lot of money for tickets to our show on May 19th because they think they’re going to see a middleweight championship fight, but really, that’s false advertising because you’re just fighting another junior middleweight,” said the always quotable Miranda about Taylor’s title defense against Cory Spinks, who is making his 160 pound debut. “So I’m willing to move my fight with Pavlik into the main event spot, and you can be on my undercard. This way the fans get what they paid for, we’ll probably sell even more tickets, and you get to see two REAL middleweights fight.”
Miranda, 28-1 with 24 KOs, has been must-see TV for fight fans from the time he arrived on US shores in 2005. Since then, he has knocked out contenders and former title challengers, beat down a rising star, got robbed of a championship via a larcenous decision, and received the blessing of middleweight legend Bernard Hopkins, who passed the 160-pound torch to the 26-year old. On May 19th, he battles unbeaten power puncher Kelly Pavlik in a highly-anticipated showdown.
“This is a fight between a man and a boy, but if the fans want to see it, I’m glad to knock Pavlik out,” said Miranda. “My only concern is that I will be so impressive that Taylor will give up his belts rather than face me. That’s okay though, because eventually, he’ll have to step into the ring with me, and from the first time I hit him, he’ll know that I’m no junior middleweight.”

Taylor, who dethroned Bernard Hopkins of the middleweight crown, has been critized lately for his lack of competition in the ring . Many people feel that he was given a gift when his fight with Winky Wright was declared a draw. In his next fight, he beat a much smaller and outmatched Kassim Ouma. In his latest match-up, Taylor was slated to meet Contender Champion Sergio Mora. Most boxing fans and insiders believe that most ‘Contender’ fighters are not on the same level as the top fighters, as was seen when Calzaghe defeated Peter Manfredo Jr. early this month. Mora pulled out of the bout and was replaced by Cory Spinks. Spinks (36-3, 11KO’s) is basically a bulked up Welterweight.
With the Middleweight and Super Middleweight division stock piled with good fighters including Calzaghe, Mikkal Kessler, Edison Miranda, Kelly Pavilk, it seems Taylor is picking and choosing smaller opponent.

Speaking of Jermain Taylor, he is set to fight as well. Rumor is that his fight and the Pavlik-Miranda fight will both be on the same card! No opponent for Taylor has been named, however contender champion Sergio Mora has been rumors.
