Timbo’s Slice – “The nick-name game”

New York, NY – (July 2nd) – Nick·name –noun a name added to or substituted for the proper name of a person, place, etc., as in affection, ridicule, or familiarity: He has always loathed his nickname of “Whizzer.” ~Dictionary.com There are good nicknames and bad ones. The best nicknames are the ones that have some truth to them and somehow pop into our heads when we see or think about that person.
Creating a nickname is an art. The movie Top Gun had the nicknames of “Maverick and Goose” take over each character’s persona and we forget that their names in the movie were Pete Mitchell and Nick Bradshaw. mavgoose.jpg Chris Berman of ESPN has made a career of creatively adding words between an athletes first and last name. Some of my favorite Berman names include Fred “Crime Dogg” McGriff, Natrone “Refried” Means, and Mike “your in good hands with” Alstot. After perusing some of Berman’s work, I thought to myself, what are the best nicknames in the world of boxing? Here is a list of the 10 best that I’ve come up with thus far…

10. Juan “The Hispanic Causing Panic” Lazcano
9. Bernard “The Executioner” Hopkins
8. “Iron” Mike Tysonmiketyson.jpg
7. Davarryl “Touch of Sleep” Williamson
6. Evander “The Real Deal” Holyfield
5. “Merciless” Ray Mercer
4. O’Neil “Give ‘em Hell” Bell
3. James “Bonecrusher” Smith
2. “Butterbean” Eric Esch
1. Darnell “The Ding-a-ling Man” Wilson
Friday night in Staten Island Darnell Wilson reminded everyone how he has come to be known as “The Ding-a-ling Man” by taking the USBA Cruiserweight Championship from Emmanuel Nwodo. Ding-a-ling was losing the fight through the first nine rounds but managed to land a devastating uppercut in the 10th round to stun Nwodo. Ding-a-ling’s right uppercut dropped Nwodo to the ring but Nwodo wouldn’t be counted out. Emmanuel was literally saved by the bell as round ten ended seconds later. In round eleven Nwodo seemed to regain his composure and attacked Ding-a-ling. This burst of energy from Nwodo wouldn’t last long as Ding-a-ling’s powerful punches finally took their toll. If you missed the knockout, it has been all over Sports Center highlights and Youtube. You might want to sit down for this one, Ding-a-ling packs quite a punch! Whoever made up Darnell Wilson’s nickname knew exactly what they were doing. Ding-a-ling’s left hook might have earned him the knockout of the year!
