James “Lights Out” Toney and Sam “The Nigerian Nightmare” Peter will kick off the new year with some heavyweight boxing tonight on SHOWTIME. The two heavyweight contenders are coming off a controversial September decision, a fight that Peter won by split decision, but left many fans and boxing experts unsatisfied. The winner of tonight’s fight will be the mandatory challenger for Oleg Maskaev’s WBC Title.

As the years have passed by, so has Toney’s (69-5-3, 43 KO’s) weight. Toney started his career off as a Middleweight and has now grown to fight in the heavyweight division. Though his heavyweight status comes in the form of being fat, Toney has proven that he can hang with the big boys for 12 rounds. It’s been a little more than 2 years since Toney first stepped into a heavyweight fight, earning a victory over heavyweight deadbeat Evander Holyfield, he hasn’t proven that he belongs in the ring. He tested positive for an illegal substance after his fight with Chris Ruiz and could only pull out a draw against Hasim Rahman. But a new “slimmer” Toney has his eyes set on claiming a major heavyweight boxing title, and this second chance at Peter could be his last.

Peter (27-1, 22 KO’s) has had moderate success in his young career. He been able to win smaller organizational heavyweight title belts, but hasn’t been able to win the big fight. He suffered a Unanimous Decision loss to Wladimir Klitschko in 2005, but has rebounded quickly. He’s won his last three bouts since, and looks to put away Toney for good.

Make sure to tune in tonight live at 10pm EST on SHOWTIME from the Seminole Hard Rock Arena in Hollywood, Florida.

Touchgloves.com Prediction:

Farz B.- I don’t think Toney has the strength to knockout any real heavyweight and I think he has more to prove to the world than Peter. Peter should look to knockout Toney, and not put the fight in the judges hands. Final Prediction: Peter By Decision
